Abstract

When used properly, technology could enhance mathematical understanding of students. This article involves an addition game that first grade elementary school students played in their mathematics lessons. As part of the activity, the students used computer applets that are available online. The students played the addition game in pairs using virtual manipulatives. The main goal of the game was to help students have a rich understanding for addition by using multiple representations (numbers and virtual base ten blocks) and making connections among them. Another goal was helping students strengthen their comprehension for place value in two-digit numbers.
